Een van mijn grootste literaire helden, Primo Levi (1919-1987), woonde zijn hele leven – afgezien van zijn jaar in Auschwitz – in een huis in dezelfde straat als waar ik nu woon. Toen ik daar zojuist achter kwam, twee weken nadat ik naar Turijn ben verhuisd, moest ik daar wel even langsgaan.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Het palazzo valt nauwelijks op als ik er langsloop; het is er een zoals alle andere. Achter een van de balkons pende de schrijver-chemicus zijn beroemde boeken neer (zoals Is dit een mens<\/a><\/em>), uitkijkend over de brede straat met kastanjebomen. Daar schreef hij eens een gedicht over, getiteld \u2018Cuore di legno\u2019: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Geen van de langslopende Italianen kijkt naar het gebouw op of om. Er hangt dan ook geen plakkaat met zijn naam ter nagedachtenis naast de deur. Vreemd – al past dat misschien ook weer wel bij zijn bescheiden aard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
